Causes of Foot Fractures

Your feet support the weight of your body while standing, walking, running, or exercising meaning that they handle a lot of pressure on a daily basis But, if they are put under too much pressure, they may fracture. A foot fracture can also happen during an accident or due to medical conditions, such as arthritis, that weakens the bones.

Common causes of foot fracture include:

  • Falling from a high place
  • Tripping or stumbling
  • Direct hit to the bone which is common in contact sports and in accidents
  • Long-term effect from causes such as running or other forms of exercises
  • Medical condition, such as osteoarthritis or cancer

Symptoms of Foot Fractures

Common symptoms of a foot fracture include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Redness and/or heat
  • Intense pain
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Difficulty moving your foot or toes
  • Inability to put weight on the foot
  • Broken skin with the bone showing and or bone that looks out of place

Foot Fracture Treatments

Treatment for a foot fracture depends on the type of break and how serious it is. Treatments include:

  • Medicine: Anti-inflammatory medicines like aspirin, ibuprofen, and other pain killers can help decrease pain, swelling, and inflammation in the foot.
  • By Reduction:  lining up both sides of the break and fixing them in that position with a cast, splint, or boot making the bone to heal correctly.
  • By Surgery: In some cases surgery might be necessary to align the pieces of  broken or fractured bone and fix structures in the foot that may be damaged. Using metal plates and screws to hold the broken bone pieces in place.
  • By Resting: Another good way is to stay off of the injured foot for a while letting it heal. By using a cast or splint your doctor can keep the foot from moving plus using crutches or a knee scooter can help you get around.

A fracture might take several weeks or months depending on which bone was broken and what kind of fracture you have to heal properly sometimes up to six to eight weeks.
