What is Calcaneal Apophysitis?

Calcaneal apophysitis is inflammation of heel’s growth plate. Usually it affects children between the ages of 8 and 14 and this is because the heel bone does not fully develop until age of 14. Inflammation can develop when there is too much stress on the growth plate.

Calcaneal apophysitis is number one common cause of heel pain in children often can occur in one or both feet. Heel pain in children is different from the most common type of heel pain experienced by adults. In adults heel pain usually subsides after walking but pediatric heel pain usually doesn’t improve in this manner. In fact, walking typically makes the pain worse.

Causes of Calcaneal apophysitis

Overuse and stress on the heel bone through participation in sports and other activities are a major cause of calcaneal apophysitis in children and adults. The heel’s growth plate is sensitive to repeated pounding on hard surfaces and running results in muscle strain and inflamed tissue. Children and adolescents involved in soccer, track or basketball are especially vulnerable. Other potential causes of calcaneal apophysitis may include obesity, a tight Achilles tendon and biomechanical problems, like flatfoot or a high-arched feet.
